Kerria Centre regeneration application is approved

The ambitious regeneration plan for Tinkers Green and Kerria took a major step forward this week, when plans to redevelop the Kerria Centre in Amington by building 44 new homes were given the go-ahead by Tamworth Borough Council’s Planning Committee.

Members of the committee voted unanimously in favour of the outline application to demolish the existing three and four-storey 1970s maisonettes containing 36 flats and replace them with 44 new, modern homes. The application also included the demolition of the existing five shops, to be replaced by a supermarket retail store.

The Amington One Stop Centre will not be replaced in the new development, but the majority of the groups previously using it have moved to the Sacred Heart Church and other locations within the borough, while the remainder of the groups are being given help and support to find new premises.

Cllr Steve Claymore, Cabinet member for Economy & Education, said: “This is a much-needed regeneration which will bring vast improvements to the lives of the residents and for Tamworth as a whole.

“It gives us the opportunity to replace the outdated and unpopular estate with modern homes fit for the 21st century.”

The Kerria application is part of a proposed £21.5 million regeneration programme to demolish a total of 136 houses, bungalows, flats and maisonettes across Tinkers Green and Kerria in Amington, to be replaced with 152 new homes in total. These are the first new Tamworth council homes being built in Tamworth for some 30 years.

The application to redevelop and regenerate Tinkers Green by demolishing the seven three and four-storey maisonette blocks and building 108 new homes was approved by the planning committee last month.

The next stage of the development will be the appointment of a building contractor and there will be further opportunities for local people to comment on the detailed design of the re-development.
